What are Blade Servers?

Posted on Tue, 23 Feb 2010 by Jim

A funny thing has been happening recently?.

We’ve had a few sales enquiries about our HP Blade dedicated servers that ask whether these are based on shared servers, virtualised machines or share resources between them. Upon following this up it would appear that an un-named, so called “competitor” has been putting the word out that this is what a “blade server” amounts to.

We had a good laugh about this over at Clook HQ and can only assume that said “competitor” either suffers from a severe lack of knowledge about the industry in which they operate OR employs the tactic of lying to try and get the sale. We’re still trying to decide which is worse!

To clear up any confusion we’d like to publicly state that our Blade Dedicated Servers are in no way virtualised or based on shared hardware in any way. Technically there are shared elements in that they are powered and cooled by PSU’s and fans within the blade enclosure itself but all server components such as CPU(s), RAM, hard drives, main board, etc are all contained within each blade chassis just like older style rackmount (or even desktop) server hardware. Blades used for our dedicated server line are not clustered or linked together in any kind of resource pooling way.

Blade technology is a fairly new development in hardware design allowing servers to fit into a smaller space and use less power meaning that we can get more servers per rack with less harm to the environment (by using less power). In addition, due to all components coming together as one package from the vendor (in our case, HP) the machines are considerably more stable and last a lot longer in full use.

This comes at a cost though with this kind of enterprise level hardware costing quite a bit more than cheaper, home built servers. While this does affect our costs we feel it’s money well worth paying in return for the much better stability we get in return along with the lower stress levels involved with having servers online performing well instead of broken, unstable or in urgent need of replacement (causing customer downtime throughout).

For anyone wanting more information about blade servers, and to see a picture of the exact blades and enclosures we use (HP c7000 Enclosure full of BL460c blades) please see the link below:

Reseller Hosting For Web Designers & Agencies

Posted on Sat, 07 Nov 2009 by Jim

As a web designer or agency, choosing the right reseller hosting services or even the right domain name service can give you a leg up over all of the competition.

Even if you are a web designer or agency who already has a reseller account up and running, you should always be on the lookout for the best possible reseller hosting services to give you the results that you desire. If you think about it, your business is constantly growing so it is imperative that you have a good, reputable online service that will bring your website and your business to a whole other level

With the inception of the internet, businesses have been popping up everywhere online. If you pair your business offerings with a hosting company that can serve you properly, then you are sure to see incredible results. Clook is a company that has all of the reseller hosting services and support that you could want all rolled into convenient packages. Whether you are looking for hosting, reseller hosting domain names or a number of services, you basically have everything that you need right at your fingertips.

For example, you can look at the reseller hosting package. Now, this particular Clook package offers customers such as web designers and agencies the chance to host sites on behalf of third parties. If you have sufficient space on your hard drive and bandwidth you can be making profits from hosting other party?s sites!

Reseller hosting packages vary in shapes and sizes. Generally the best reseller hosting packages will offer you total anonymity along with additional extras such as free billing software and a free offline network account. You should also look for the basics such as speed, accuracy and technical support. Remember, you are going to be appearing as the host to your clients so any problems are going to come down as the first point of contact.

The advantage to Clook reseller hosting sites is that you don?t actually have to run the e-business sites by yourself. Web designers and agencies profit by providing a service and as long as that service is of a high quality there is no reason why you shouldn?t turn a good profit.

Take the time to do some research on the types of businesses and sites that you would like to host. Areas that you may have experience or interests are good places to start. You will also have to research pricing; how to stay competitive as well as fair. Even if you already have your own online business, you can still think of taking on the role as the host. With a little bit of help from the Clook reseller hosting package the sky can literally be the limit for any web designer or agency.

Know Your Hosting Package

Posted on Fri, 23 Oct 2009 by Jim

When you have your own online business, the last thing that you want to do is find yourself stuck in a trap by thinking that you have to fall for the cheapest hosting service around. While you may be able to say some money, you are sure to run into some problems along the way. Clook knows that when it comes to your online presence, the last thing that you want is to have to end up kicking yourself for settling for anything less than the best.

While there are always times when a bargain is music to your ears, you really need to make sure that you are getting a good service in terms of your hosting options. Your website needs to be up and running properly with a company that knows the importance of running a tight ship. Additionally, lower cost hosting services may not provide their customers with the type of customer service and support that will be necessary for a good working relationship.

Take the time to look at what all of your options are with the hosting companies that you are researching. When you stop to think about it, this is a decision that is meant to be looked at from both a financial and a business standpoint. The proper hosting services can really be looked at as a business investment into the future growth and well being of your online presence.

Clook will be the first to tell you the importance of using professional hosting services to ensure that you get personalised attention. Think for a moment to the fact that you are going to potentially be sharing services with other customers. The last thing you want is to be stuck in the same boat with other customers who have signed on for a cheaper service, thus you all receive less than stellar services. Settling for cheaper hosting services will open up the door for getting blocked by spam blocking software if you find that another member using the service ends up spamming mailing lists and so on.

Basically speaking, your online presence can be one of the most vital pieces to your financial growth. If you cut corners by choosing a hosting service that is cheaper than the rest, then you are just asking for trouble. Clook can tell you first hand that spending a little bit more on a reputable and respectable internet hosting service can be one of the best investments that you will ever make. You?ll have the support you need should a problem arise and will not have the constant worry of whether or not your hosting company is even going to be in existence from month to month.

Backup improvements

Posted on Tue, 22 Sep 2009 by Jim

This work isn?t quite complete yet and will be detailed via the announcements system at a later date. I couldn?t resist posting about some of the improvements made here recently?

Thankfully, we don?t need to call on backups for total server restores all that often. However, it remains a critical element of any hosting service because at the very minimum, clients should be able to expect to have their files backed up regularly and stored in a safe and secure environment so if the worst should happen (either single file restore, whole account or entire server) backup archives can be called upon.? Depending on how far one wants to go, it can get pretty expensive!

We have recently moved our big NAS server to a facility outside of London and are in the process of setting up a private GigE link back to our kit in Docklands to run our bare metal backups to.? This is a nice bit of software allowing servers to be backed up more regularly, without major server load with data restore available on a per file/dir basis or on a bare metal basis (whole partition or drive). The benefits of this are huge as should we require it, a whole server filesystem can be restored in just a few steps with no hastle associated with software installs, compiles, settings, etc that used to go with server restores. In case anyone is interested, the software we? ve been using for some years on all shared/reseller servers (soon available on managed dedicated servers) can be read about at http://www.r1soft.com/

In addition to the bare metal backup level, we have recently put a new local backup unit online. This is used with all blade servers which don?t have space for a secondary drive purely for backups and after a while of using regular NAS servers with NFS, we?re now going for a long term and much more stable solution. We have just completed the config of our new EqualLogic SAN unit which will live on the backup LAN in LHC and store all the backups for blade servers (included as standard on blade dedicated servers).? The cost of this thing is enormous but it?s darn good! iSCSI mounts in place on all servers are working at much nicer IO speeds which is combined with the much greater security and stability for all local backups. With this in place hopefully that will be the end of all backup storage problems for a long while to come! Info here on the SAN: http://www.equallogic.com/products/view.aspx?id=8349

Can you guess the website?

Posted on Tue, 22 Sep 2009 by Alec

In the midst of researching a new technology that we will be bringing to the table in the coming months I stumbled upon an interesting article that detailed the hosting environment of a particular (popular) website. I took the following statistics and queried a few colleagues to see if they could guess the website that the statistics represent. They were unable to guess correctly. Can you?

1.5 terabytes of data (compressed)
50,000 HTTP requests (per second)
80,000 SQL queries (per second)
